Integral Musician

About Integral Musician

We build music tools for people who want to hear more and play more.

Music has a way of making you curious. You hear a bass line you want to play, a chorus you want to understand, or a sound you wish you could describe. Integral Musician grew from the belief that better software can help more people follow that curiosity.

It started with the questions people ask when they love a song.

Why does this part work so well? How do I play it? Why can I recognize it instantly, but struggle to explain what I am hearing? These questions come up whether you are learning your first instrument, coming back to music after years away, or writing songs of your own.

Our starting point was a practical problem: music technology can surface a remarkable amount of information, yet musicians still spend time connecting that information to what they hear and what they can do. We wanted tools that make those connections easier to explore.

Song Genome grew from the need to explain music with evidence and room for correction. Bass Coach grew from a more immediate goal: help an adult beginner play a recognizable part of a favorite song. Together, they shaped the direction of Integral Musician.

Understanding should not depend on having unlimited time.

Some people have years of lessons behind them. Others have short practice windows, a borrowed instrument, or an unfinished song they can only return to on weekends. The desire to make music is often larger than the time and resources available to study it.

We want to make musical learning and musical understanding more accessible. That means clear starting points, fewer unnecessary steps, explanations you can follow, and software that gives you control over your own pace.

Your musical judgment matters more than a confident answer on a screen.

Meet Brett Thomas

Founder and AI architect, Integral Musician

Brett Thomas builds AI software and develops tools designed to help people learn, decide, and do better work. Integral Musician brings that work into a personal interest: understanding music and getting better at playing it.

As an adult bass learner, Brett knows how rewarding it can be to play a recognizable part of a favorite song, and how quickly practice can get complicated when every answer sends you to another video, tab, or tool. Bass Coach began as an attempt to make that path more direct.

He is developing Integral Musician as a connected family of products, starting with Song Genome and Bass Coach and using evidence from musicians to decide what should be built next.

See the Tools We Are Building

A few principles guide every product.

Begin with the music

A song someone already loves is a strong reason to practice, study, and listen more closely.

Explain what you can

Measured information, calculated patterns, and interpretations are different things. We want the software to tell you which is which.

Make room for correction

A knowledgeable ear should be able to disagree, see the evidence, and help improve an explanation.

Build what people use

A feature earns its place when it helps someone understand a song, play a phrase, or make a more thoughtful musical choice.

Research and the art of listening

The Song Genome Project

For decades, researchers and music technology companies have found remarkable ways to describe, classify, analyze, and work with recordings. Their achievements are part of the story of how music intelligence reached this point.

The Song Genome Project studies what those systems taught us and where their questions ended. It also explores a more personal question: how can someone hear a familiar song with fresh understanding?

That work is informing a research paper and a narrative nonfiction book in development. The book is meant to be useful even for someone who never opens an Integral Musician app.

Different tools. One musical ambition.

Song Genome explores how songs are built and how they move. Bass Coach helps learners turn a familiar musical part into something they can play. Guitar Coach, Ukulele Coach, and Drum Coach are planned extensions of that learning approach. We intend to connect the product family through shared song intelligence where it improves the experience, while keeping each product focused on the job it serves.

Follow along as we build.

We are sharing music questions, practical lessons, demonstrations, and progress from the tools as they develop. If you are learning an instrument, writing songs, teaching music, or simply listening with curiosity, we would be glad to have you along.
